Bedside Story

(William Reedy)
2007-10-26
William Reedy
A human life begins.
While I stood by her bedside
I tried to do some good
I tried to ease her suffering
Any way I could
I tried to give her water but
Her teeth were clenched in pain
Something deep inside her
Was starting up again
I held my breath till the moment
When the baby began to cry
When the baby began to cry

His eyes were closed, his skin it was
A pale shade of blue
Midwife she was standing by
She told me what to do
“See how his little nostrils
Are all plugged up with snot
Hold his head real steady while
I try to clean it out”
His eyes came open, his skin turned pink
As he began to cry
As he began to cry

His mother panted in relief
His pain was finally gone
Now her fear had turned to joy
Because she had a son
We cleaned and wrapped the little one
And put him at her breast
Her eyes were locked upon his
And so I sat down to rest
Something woke up in my soul
When that baby began to cry
When that baby began to cry
