Out of the Woods

This is the story of a man struggling with poverty, homelessness and psychosis.
Well I stepped Out of the Woods and into the world
When the treetops swayed and the cold wind swirled
All day I tried to find a place to hide
Up under a bridge I finally curled
The water was rushing down below
And I was freezing from head to toe
Above my head the traffic sped
And I wondered,”who do I have to know”
Speak to me, speak to me, I can hear you speak to me
Why did you stop to speak to me today?
I hear you talking, yes I do
Let me turn my ear to you
So I can make out what you have to say
See the people hurrying past
Looking away and walking fast
I’m growing old, I getting cold
I don’t know how long I can last
Since I wandered off the path
I count the days and do the math
I move about, I do without
A warm soft bed or a nice hot bath
Walk with me, talk with me
Let me keep you company
While from poverty I try to climb
I hear some birds I see some light
I believe I’ve made it through the night
And so I’ll greet the morning one more time
So I’m Out of the Woods, I’m out in the street
I need a place to pee I need something to eat
I’ll try my best to find a nest
Where I can rest my weary feet
Cold and hungry, wild and free
Or locked up just for being me
That’s the way the world today
Works as far as I can see
Look for me, look for me
Back in the woods behind a tree
Under the sky is where I’ll be today
One day I’ll come back to town
And leave before the sun goes down
I won’t stay too long if that’s ok
I’ll go back Out of the Woods
And into the world
I’ll venture Out of the Woods
And into the world.
